Despite such setbacks, Miller was a strong hiker and often covered more than 20 miles a day -- an impressive pace considering he was carrying a po I love a good outdoor memoir, and this is awop excellent account of a man who quit his job in to hike all 2, miles of the Appalachian Trail.
Jul 08, Mark Brown rated it liked it. Aug 15, Diane rated it really liked it. It is a great book if you are going to walk the trail, which often I questioned as to whether it was a trail or not when he had to climb over large and dangerous boulders. Well done David Miller.
This book just made me want to read that one again.
AWOL on the Appalachian Trail (Unabridged)
The descriptions of nature and of the author's ideas and feelings were really good. The author focuses on the physical hardships blisters, rain, aggravated tendons, thr rain, less than ideal food, foot infection, and even more rain and the mental weight of being away from his family and unemployed during his day j An enjoyable read about the author's hike, south wppalachian north, up the Appalachian Trail in It really appealed to my secret, inner desire to just say 'fuck it all' and take off for the wilderness.
My fond recollections of my hike are full of unremarkable moments, like the smell of a dewy morning, the crunch of leaves underfoot, the blaze of a campfire, the soothing trickle thf a stream, or the rays of sun through a maze of trees. The concept and examples of "trail magic" that he described were, well, magical.

AWOL on the Appalachian Trail
We should have a bias toward doing activities that we don't normally do to keep loose the moorings of society. A Walk for Sunshine.
While not as comical or artfully written as Bill Bryson's "Walk in the Woods," "AWOL" more authentically describes the actual experience of a dedicated thru-hiker: We are never told how much his brother's hike from 21 years earlier influenced him, even subconsciously. I am friendlier and more patient.
AWOL on the Appalachian Trail by David Miller
At times prone to overwrought landscape descriptions and commentary tedious as the trail itself, "AWOL" is at its best delighting in the "atavistic pleasure" of being outdoors, and describing the interesting characters met along the way: David Miller has none of this nonsense. If he put a little more of something that's entertaining into the book I'm sure it would grab a lot more people.
Excess is a burden, even when you are not carrying it around on your back.
I DL'd the sample chapters. Simply sitting unhurried in the shade of leaves is an irreplaceable moment. I get it, but I still don't think I'd let Jeff do appxlachian like this, nor could I go myself. I especially loved learning about all the nicknames of all the hikers I've always enjoyed real-life adventure stories, and although some of the reviewers criticized Miller's writing style, I thought it was well-suited to the genre.
But as I read on, he finally found the right pair of boots and wwol the remainder of his trip. Hikers, Students, Nature - Fantasy - Literature - fans, anyone really. I would want him to be with me for that. One of the best AT books I've read.
The next day my feet were fine, but my legs were like wet noodles and I wondered if I could even make it out, but as I walked they followed me. Grail I go backpacking or hiking I'm disappointed if I see anyone at all.
Product details Format Paperback pages Dimensions The two books complement each other well.
I'm a sucker for any long-distance hiking anything book. From the back cover: If you are interested in getting some ideas of the trail, some hiking tips, some humanity, it is all here.
